Definitions Systems: • A group of items forming a whole. • An orderly way of achieving a goal. Subsystems • A secondary part of a larger system. • Small systems which are combined to make up complex systems.
INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT System Loop Systems can be classified into two major groupings– Open Loop System & Closed Loop Systems Open Loop Systems Model Open Loop systems are those systems that have to be manually adjusted because they lack automatic feedback. Turning on/off the water faucets at home. Adjusting the speed of an automobile using the foot pedal. Closed Loop Systems Model Closed loop systems are those systems that can monitor (watch) and adjust themselves without manual feedback. Supermarket doors Cruise control on modern cars Thermostat in a house for heating/cooling
Components • Input • Process • Output • Monitor • Compare and Adjust
Input • Input is the information, ideas, and activities that we need to provide to determine what we need to accomplish. • Can be a command.
Process • The part of the system during which something is done. • The “action” part of the system.
Output • The result of the system’s process.
Monitor/Feedback • Information about the output of a system • Used to monitor how a system is working • Used to make adjustments to the system
Compare and Adjust • Compare output to input. Make adjustments as necessary to achieve desired output. • Adjustments made by people – Open System • Adjustments made automatically – Closed system
Open Systems • Systems that have to be constantly adjusted by YOU
Closed Systems • Systems that can monitor (watch) and adjust themselves without you being involved.
