  1. Ian page 51IONS & Isotopes Main Ideas1. Isotopes 2. Ions Objective Describe and outline ions and isotopes using notes, video, collaboration and written summaries.

  2. I. Atomic Differences A. Atoms can be slightly different, the number of neutrons or electrons can vary for an atom. 1. ISOTOPESare atoms with a different # of neutronsthan the normal atom of its same kind. 2. IONSare atoms with a different # of electronsthan the normal atom of its same kind.

  3. Divide page 50 of your IAN into equal halves.

  4. Hydrogen ISOTOPES TOP 1/2 IAN pg. 50 Ex. Hydrogen At #1 Ex. Hydrogen At #1(Deuterium) 1 Electron 1 Electron Nucleus 1 Proton Nucleus 1 Proton 1 Neutron Ex. Hydrogen At #1 (Tritium) 1 Electron Nucleus 1 Proton 2 Neutron

  5. II. Element Discoveries A. People have known about the elements since ancient times. Ex. copper, gold and iron B. 20 elements were known by 1775. C. By 1830 about 50 elements were known.

  6. D. By 1900, 85 elements were known. Ida Tacke, Walter Noddack, and Otto Berg discovered Rhenium in June 1925. It was the Last Naturally occurring element to be discovered. E. 2010, There are 112 officially named elements. 112 = Copernicium (Cn) after Nicolas Copernicus

  7. 1. 92 elements are Naturally occuring 2. 26 Made artificially in a Lab 3. 118+ Elements total --- more artificial elements could be made!
