Class Overview & Approach: • Concepts / lecture 1st half of evening • Lab, projects / teaming & MS Project 2nd half of evening • Focus is building a PMO in your current environment • If no current work, you will build consulting company model w/ PMO as major service delivery vehicle • Focus on MS Project • Project support team for PM issues • Want PMP type questions again?
Project Paper Specifics – ref p. 9 of published class criteria • 4 main bullet points – is the outline • Anybody not started? • Questions / problems?
Use of MS Project & Lab • Develop a functional understanding of the pm tool in the lab • Use the tool in your project and project reporting • Will NOT be tested on the final exam
PY 673 Resource team • Purpose, act as “in house” consultants to non 672 students during class with PM issues on project “paper” • Will rotate every other week, if desired, in resource role • Will receive one letter grade bump on mid-term quiz for service • Members expected to complete all work, tests and project assigned as equal member of the class
MS Project Incentive • “Expert status” will receive 1 full letter grade “bump-up” on the final exam • What is this called? • Know functions of tool beyond class instruction in lab • Specifically know & help direct understanding & use of reporting features for class projects • Serve on resource team • If all aspects exceeded, PJS will write letter of acknowledgement & commendation to your employer • Will be expected to complete all class work, tests and project as an equal member of the class.
REPORT OUT GUIDE – PROJECT PAPER STATUS • A PM must “know their numbers” • A PM must be current on all facets of the respective elements of their projects such as: • Task status • % of project completion in total • Earned value • Budget status and completion estimates • Resource management issues (not people) • Human resource / staff management issues • Changes to critical path (if any) • Next steps • Develop a spreadsheet & use MS Project reporting
