How to indicate age and time of day Grammar Note: When indicating age, the sign OLD is followed by a number sign. For the number 1-5 the palm is turned outward as in OLD-5 above. When indicate time of day, the sign TIME is followed by a number sign for the hour (and minute). As with indicating age, the palm is also turned outward for the number 1-5 as in the following sentences:

More classifiers that indicate size and shape Note: Classifiers are often used humorously as in the sentence below in which the classifier 55 representing “small, round objects” is used to describe an improbable event.

About schools for Deaf children Culture Note: For many years, state supported residential “schools for the deaf” have served as places where large numbers of Deaf children, including those from hearing families, become socialized into the cultural group. Many children learn American Sign Language at schools such as these rather than at home. Unto the 1960’s, because of distance and cost, children often had to stay at the schools on weekends and visited their parents’ home only on holidays or during the summers. Some Deaf children were reluctant to leave the school. When their families did not use sign language, the attraction of the school, with its large number of signers, was often stronger.

Several ways to sign to someone without others seeing what you are signing. Note: There are several ways to sign to someone when you do not want others to see what you are saying. Among them are: • The signing movement is smaller and closer to the body. Also the body may be turned slightly to the side. • Signing may be done with only one hand while the other hand shields it from view. • The information can be fingerspelled close to the body an behind the other hand.
