  2. Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) • Founded Christian Science • Most remarkable religious figures of modern times. • She wrote Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures • Founded Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

  3. What is Christian Science? • It is a science because it is based upon a set of spiritual principles—laws relating to the nature of God & his creation

  4. Christian Science=Christian? • Denies doctrines of Christianity • Reinterpreted the Bible • Ripped scriptures out of their historical & Biblical contexts • Redefines Bible’s culture & terminology

  5. *Beliefs* • God is a principle of the Divine Mind—has no person hood or personality • Sin & sickness are only errors of the Divine Mind & have no true reality • Jesus is a way-shower—someone who epitomized the true principle of Christian consciousness that indwells us all—he did not die on the cross, did not shed his blood, & was not God in flesh • Christ—divine idea man, Jesus was not Christ but the perfect example of the Christ consciousness which is above us all (Christian Scientist can say “I am Christ” • Devil—evil, a lie, error

  6. *Death & Dying* • Death—an illusion, lie of life in matter • Heaven—not a literal place of eternal bliss • Hell—state of mind, this exists when a person’s thoughts are out of harmony with the reality of the Divine Mind • Christian Science theology does not include a final judgment day • Everyday each individual can make a new choice that can determine the path he or she is on—away from God or towards him

  7. *Medication* • Christian Scientists promotes healing of physical & mental illnesses through prayer. • They do not take any medications. • They do compromise in the case of a broken bone. • They do have to abide by city & state laws when it comes to communicable diseases & child care.

  8. Christian Science=Positive Thinking? • Positive thinking relies on the human mind to think or effect a good result. • Christian Science starts with God & the conviction that God’s goodness embraces each of us at all times.

  9. Is Christian Science a Cult? • No, there is no brainwashing, mind control, or blind following of a leader. • Christian Scientists do have a deep appreciation to the founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, but they do not worship her.

  10. What does a Christian Science Nurse do? • Christian Science nurses provide skillful, non-medical physical care for anyone relying on Christian Science for healing. • Includes bathing, wound dressings, assistance with mobility, feedings, & etc.
