  2. EQ: What is an Archetype? • An archetype is a pattern, such as a type of character or type of story, that is repeated in literature.

  3. The Innocent • Child/Youth • Inexperienced Adult • Aka: dreamer

  4. The Hero • Always trying to prove one’s worth through courageous acts • Strives to be as strong and competent as possible • Aka: warrior, crusader, superhero, soldier, rescuer

  5. The Caregiver • Strives to protect and care for others • Always helping others • AKA: saint, parent, helper, supporter

  6. The explorer • Strives to find himself through exploring the world • Fears getting trapped and inner emptiness • Ambitious, aimlessly wanders • AKA: seeker, wanderer, individualist

  7. The rebel • Feels rules are made to be broken • Desires revenge • Greatest weakness : joining the dark side • fears being powerless • AKA: the outlaw, misfit

  8. The villain • The bad guy • Strives to outsmart the good guy(s)

  9. The damsel in distress • Vulnerable woman • Must be rescued by the hero

  10. The wise counselor / mentor • Serve as teachers, role models • Often serve as mother or father • Teach by example

  11. The supernatural guide • Hero always seems to receive some sort of supernatural help, whether it be from a god, a wizard, or a spirit.

  12. The good mother • Provides warmth, nourishment, protection, fertility, growth

  13. The Soul Mate • The partner, lover, friend • Protects and completes

  14. The scapegoat • Blamed for everything regardless whether he/she is actually at fault
