  2. Goals For Health Ministry • To promote total wellness: spiritual, physical mental. Empower people to live longer here and also receive eternal life • To play a significant role in church growth • To help reduce disparities • To give culturally competent care—minister to everyone despite their ethnic group, social class, and culture

  3. Major Health Priorities • Coronary artery disease • Hypertension • Cancer: prostate, breast, colon, lung • Diabetes • Obesity • Physical Inactivity • Smoking, drug/alcohol abuse • Infectious disease: e.g. AIDS, STD’s • Maternal/child health

  4. Getting Started • Develop a health team in your church • Get your pastor’s support • Recruit and train church members to take part in health ministry • Make a yearly calendar for health ministry • Be familiar with the Scriptures, the Spirit of Prophecy, the Adventist Health Study, and the medical literature with evidence based information • Network with other churches, community organizations, and health care facilities • Minister also to your own congregation

  5. Health Screening • Hypertension: Use battery powered blood pressure cuffs placed on the arm. Give out health brochures. • Diabetes: Use simple glucometers • Cholesterol: Cholestec machines the best to use. • Weight: Use BMI charts • Prostate Cancer: requires medical providers and a professional lab • Breast Cancer: Need a mammogram access and medical providers • Colon Cancer: Instruction in options for screening • Health Risk Assessment Forms: Useful to have people assess themselves

  6. Chronic Disease Management • Hypertension • Diabetes • Obesity • Stress Management • Depression • Smoking Cessation

  7. Diabetes Hypertension Weight Management Exercise AIDS/HIV, STD’s Teen health issues Senior citizen health issues Healthy cooking Addiction recovery: alcohol, drugs, tobacco Seminars

  8. Timing of Seminars • Health weekend • Annual day of health emphasis • Week long meetings • Evening meetings • Participation in evangelistic meetings

  9. Places To Minister • Churches • Community centers • Shopping centers • Libraries • Barber shops • Community festivals/special events

  10. Special Programs • “Search Your Heart”—From the American Heart Association. • “Power To End Stroke”—From the American Heart Association • “Project Power”—From the American Diabetes Association
