UNIT 3:FIRE CONFINEMENT, EXPOSURE PROTECTION,AND FIRE EXTINGUISHMENT
OBJECTIVES The students will: • Select and deploy the appropriate hose- lines to accomplish fire confinement, exposure protection, and fire extinguishment. • Using the command sequence cycle, develop a confinement action plan based on the incident presented. • Using the command sequence cycle, develop an exposure protection action plan based on the incident presented.
OBJECTIVES (cont'd) • Using the command sequence cycle, develop a fire extinguishment action plan based on the incident presented. • Identify and explain the actions required to support fire confinement, exposure protection, and fire extinguishment activities.
FIRE CONFINEMENT Those actions taken to confine a fire to a given area of present involvement by preventing the spread of fire into any uninvolved area.
EXPOSURE PROTECTION Tactical operations performed to protect exposed property and areas near the fire from becoming involved.
FIRE EXTINGUISHMENT Those actions taken following fire confinement to extinguish a fire by removing the fuel, air supply, or, most commonly, the heat.
PRINCIPLES OF FIRE CONFINEMENT, EXPOSURE PROTECTION, AND EXTINGUISHMENT • Keep fire from extending into unburned area. • Protect areas and property near the fire building from becoming involved (external exposures).
PRINCIPLES OF FIRE CONFINEMENT, EXPOSURE PROTECTION, AND EXTINGUISHMENT (cont'd) • Protect areas in the fire building from becoming involved (internal exposures). • Protect areas downwind from the fire and the dangers of flying brands. • When fire confinement has been accomplished, fire extinguishment is the next tactical operation.
FIRE CONFINEMENT A tactical assignment for fire confinement should describe the purpose for confinement.
CONFINEMENT FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSE • Describe purpose for confinement • Search or rescue • Awaiting additional resources • Save portion of structure • Prevent fire extension
SIZEUP FOR CONFINEMENT • Location and extent of fire • Building construction classification and occupancy • Fire flow requirements • Lead time required • Fixed suppression equipment • Personnel available • Coordination required
SELECTION OF HOSELINE AND NOZZLE FOR FIRE CONFINEMENT • Size of hoseline • Length of hoseline • Type and size of nozzle
Type of Hoseline Size Fast? Mobile? Volume Reach Medium 1½" 1 ¾" 2" Yes Yes Medium Medium Large 2 ½" Yes Yes Large Medium to Long Large 3" No No Large Long
POSITIONING OF HOSELINE TO SUPPORT FIRE CONFINEMENT • Support search and/or rescue • Confine fire to prevent further destruction • Coordinate with ventilation
SIZEUP REPORT OF FIREGROUND CONDITIONS • Initial report • To be given immediately upon arrival on location • Exact location and conditions as observed • – Nothing showing • – Size of structure--stories and dimensions--type of construction--occupied or vacant • – Smoke/Fire--location and density • – Status of occupants--if known • – Exposures--Sides A, B, C, D or other • – Engineis establishing Street Command.
SIZEUP REPORT OF FIREGROUND CONDITIONS (cont'd) • Subsequent report Information not immediately reported and/or information developed upon investigation--to be given ASAP or within 5 minutes. • Progress report To be given by the Incident Commander (IC) every 10 minutes until fire is under control.

(SIZEUP) Sizeup report example: • On location at 114 A Street, two-story brick row dwelling, 20' x 45', ordinary construction, occupied. • Heavy fire and smoke first and second floor, Side A. • All occupants have been removed. • Exposures Sides B and D similar type dwellings, light to medium smoke showing. • Exposure A is a street, exposure C is a driveway. • Engine 1 is establishing A Street Command.
WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED?INCIDENT OBJECTIVES Contain and control fire to room/ building of origin.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE? INCIDENT STRATEGY(IES) Confinement/Extinguishment Ventilation
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO IT? INCIDENT TACTICS • Confinement/Extinguishment • – Deploy two 1-3/4-inch hoselines to Side A for fire confinement/extinguishment • – Deploy one 1-3/4-inch hoseline to Side C for fire confinement/extinguishment • Ventilation • – Vent roof apertures of fire building • – Horizontal ventilation all floors and exposures • – Additional roof ventilation if required
IMPLEMENT THE FIRE CONFINEMENT PLAN Communicate assignments clearly to all resources operating on the incident.
EVALUATE THE FIRE CONFINEMENT ACTION PLAN • Evaluate progress every 10 minutes. • Obtain feedback reports from resources operating on the incident.
