Compass Rose Basics • Most maps and charts are oriented to North • Either magnetic north, where your compass looks • Or True north, where the North Pole ACTUALLY IS! • The cardinal headings spell NEWS (sort of) • They are 90 apart • Inter-Cardinal headings (NE, SE, SW & NW) split the circle into 8 sections and arebetween the cardinal headings • They “bisect” the cardinal angles (@ 45)
Compass Rose Basics • The compass rose counts 0 to 360 through all of the degrees of a circle • N: 000 • E: 090 • S: 180 • W: 270 and … • N: 360 (yep, again.)
