A Global Problem: • 780 million people lack access to clean water worldwide! • 3.4 million deaths worldwide annually due to water-related disease • Every 21 seconds a child dies of a water-related illness (www.water.org, 2013) • Many women and children walk long distances to get water– this often interferes with education of young girls!
How can we solve this problem? • Humanitarian efforts (NGO’s) providing support to drill wells e.g.: Engineers Without Borders • Rainwater collection? • Education and treatment of diarrheal related illness
An Interesting Solution? • http://edition.cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2009/09/01/mckenzie.sun.water.cnn • Solar disinfection of water -- water put in clear plastic bottles -- expose water to sunlight for 6-10 hours -- this appears to kill most/all organisms • Does not necessarily solve problem of distance from water source faced by some communities
