  2. Early Years • Born on October 27, 1923 in Manhattan in New York City • Paints and draws as a child; attends Ohio State in 1940 • Drafted in to the military in 1943 due to WWII; honorably discharged due to death of father in 1946

  3. Early Art Career • Receives degree in Art from Ohio State in 1946; goes on to earn Masters in Education • 1946: joins Ohio State as a fine arts instructor • During this time he creates pastels, oils, and drawings; subjects include musicians and landscapes • 1951: has first solo show in Manhattan at the CarlebachGallery (includes paintings rendered in muted pinks, blues, and mauves, and assemblages made from found wood, metal pieces, and found objects such as screws and drill buffers)

Height of Popularity • 1952 begins to display pieces in shows all over the country including Denver, New York City, Columbus, and Philadelphia • 1956: creates first “pop” art piece titled Ten Dollar Bill • In 1962 he paints Look Mickey, the first painting done without any expressionism, and using the Ben-Day dot technique, used primarily in comic books up until this point

Ben-Day Dot Technique • Printing process founded by Benjamin Day • An inexpensive technique where small dots comprised of magenta, cyan, yellow, and black, are placed close to each other to create all colors. • He enlarged and over exaggerated the technique in his paintings, mostly the ones done after comic book-style drawings

  6. Height of Popularity cont. • Coming off of Look Mickey, Lichtenstein receives much more attention and gains popularity • Creates Whaam! in 1963, which may be considered his most recognized work • In 1964, Life Magazine prints an article titled “Is He the Worst Artist in America?”
