Cost and Construction • The Erie canal was started in 1808 and finished in 1825. the canal cost the state o New York 7 million dollars. The project was going to paid for by the U.S. tax payers but was vetoed by president Monroe because he found that it was unconstitutional to raise the tax to pay for Erie Canal.
Service length • The Erie Canal was opened on October 26, 1825 expanded once in 1882 and then closed 93 years after it opened. It had paid for itself in 1882.
Uses for the Canal • The Erie canal was used as a form of transportation. Passengers could go 100 miles in 24 hours. • It was also used in transporting goods such as fresh produce and grains.
Benefits from the Erie canal • The Erie canal made it 95% cheaper to trade because it was only $10 a ton and goods could be transported 55 miles in a 24 hour period in lager quantities than it could by horse and buggies.
