  2. Goals for this session: • Discuss strategies to help your son/daughter mange the transition into college life • Describe ways to enhance the connection between students and parents. • Offer at least one new “pearl of wisdom” • Answer questions

  3. They are Not There yet… • They are emergingadults • This calls for new/different ways of behaving and communicating. • We’re all in this together. • None of us will manage the transition perfectly (and that’s o.k.)

  4. Once a parent…always a parent(your role is just changing) • Coaching • Mentoring • Guiding • Balancing needs • And (possibly) a new way of communicating

  5. Communication(enhancing the connection) • Active listening • Ask probing questions, but avoid giving advice (unless asked) • Reflecting/paraphrasing – acknowledge their feelings/position

  6. Inspire confidence • Manage your emotions (remember you are the model of a mature adult) • Help them problem solve • They will always be your child

  11. Your Assignments: • Talk about: • Expectations • Money Management • Maintaining contact (phone calls, email, texts, etc.) and visiting home • Academic decisions and information • Safety issues and emergencies.

  12. Talk About: • The Tough Stuff • Drinking • Smoking • Drugs • Sex • Other enticements and distractions

  13. Other Considerations • If your child has a chronic Medical Condition • Where ever you go…there you are…

  14. Other Tips • Impart your pearls of wisdom before they get here. • Attend sessions at orientation (Success Strategies Part 2) • When you bring them to college, make your ”goodbye” brief. • Keep it all in perspective.
