What is behavior? • A behavior is an action or series of actions performed by an animal in response to a stimulus. • The stimulus might be something in the environment, such as a sound, a smell, a color, or another individual. • The stimulus can also be related to the internal state of the animal, such as being hungry or cold. • Scientists studying behavior investigate two kinds of questions. • “How” a behavior is triggered, controlled, and performed. • “Why” a behavior exists. • Behavior scientists (called ethologists) seek to identify the benefits (to fitness) of a particular behavior.
What are the different kinds of behavior? • Scientists generally break down animal behaviors into either innate behaviors or learned behaviors
What are innate behaviors? • Determined entirely by the genes an organism receives from its parents: instincts and fixed action patterns
What are learned behaviors? • Behaviors that the environment influences to some degree. They will not be displayed by all organisms of the species from birth
