Presentation Outline • Nordic Semiconductor ASA – Short Background • Introduction to Wibree / ULP Bluetooth • Wibree technology • Wibree use cases • Sports and wellness • Healthcare • Entertainment and toys • Office and mobile accessories • Nordic Semiconductor and Wibree • Standardization Work for Fitness and Medical Applications
Nordic Semiconductor Fabless semiconductor company Specializing in low power personal area radio communication • Low power, 2.4 GHz, ~1 Mbit/s radios with flash micro-controller • PC peripherals, Intelligent sports equipment, Gaming • 105 employees • 62 R&D • 8 Support and FAEs • 16 Sales and Logistics • 19 Administration • Offices • Trondheim • Oslo • Hong Kong • Seoul • Tokyo • Sunnyvale
Leading partners chosen for manufacturingConsistent supply • Wafer production • Assembly/Test
Nordic have invested in own RF testerssecuring deliveries to an expanding market Secured test capacity is a critical factor for success 3-4 million RF chips tested per month Capacity of 6 million per month
Wibree at a glance • Initiated and headed by Nokia • Initial participants includes CSR, Broadcom, Nordic, Epson, Suunto and Tayo Yuden • Merged with Bluetooth SIG in 2007 • Many more companies now participating through the Bluetooth SIG
Purpose of Wibree • No existing open standard offers true ultra low power operation • No standard has been optimized for low power consumption for low duty cycle applications • Several years of battery lifetime on a coin cell battery • 6 to 12 months battery lifetime on AA or AAA batteries • Proprietary technologies dominates for the ultra low power applications • Examples: • 2.4GHz mouse and keyboard • Sports watches and sensors • Lack of interoperability limits wide adoption and possible applications (for example in mobile phones)
Key Concepts • Ultra low power consumption • Wibree is optimized for power consumption, specifically for low duty cycle applications (3.75ms to 4s poll intervals) • Cost efficient integration with Bluetooth™ • Wibree offers cost efficient integration with Bluetooth™ enabling a small price delta for a “dual mode” Wibree + Bluetooth ™ chip • Stand alone and dual mode Wibree chips • Stand alone Wibree chip can communicate with other stand alone Wibree chips and/or dual mode chips • A dual mode chip can communicate with other stand alone or dual mode Wibree chips in addition to other Bluetooth™ chips • Complementing Bluetooth™ and other short-range wireless standards • Wibree complements Bluetooth™ for ultra low power connectivity

Standardization Work Related to Wibree / ULP Bluetooth • It is not sufficient to standardize the radio protocol, which is only the transport layer. • One will also have to precisely define the data types and the meaning of the data being transported. • IEEE 11073 Personal Health Data Work Group • ISO / IEEE 11073-20601 • A common framework for an abstract model of personal health data available in transport independent transfer syntax required to establish logical connections between systems, provide presentation capabilities and services needed to perform communication tasks. • Bluetooth SIG Medical Devices Working Group • Medical Devices Profile
