  2. Goals • Raise awareness of eye disease and visual impairment • Respond to the need to address health disparities in minorities • Provide needed community service ‘safety net’ • Test a new, more efficient approach to screening

  3. First Screening Los Angeles, July 25, Lady of Queens Church Tied to an existing health fair 4.5 hour event 29 ophthalmologists Partners: UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute, USC Doheny Eye Institute, CAEPS, LASO and QueensCare

  4. Results • 499 screened • Majority had no insurance • More than 50% had visual impairment • 70% referred for follow-up care to resources like EyeCare America and local eyeMDs who provided care for no out-of pocket costs

  5. Next Steps • More screenings in 2011-12 • Chicago • San Antonio • Miami • Refine screening, analyze results • Launch national effort that states can implement on their own
