The Calling of a Leader • God sends out those He has called • He is a “missional God” – “One who sends out” • Jeremiah (Jer. 18) • Jonah (Jonah 1) • Isaiah’s Call (Isaiah 6) “ Who shall go…” • The disciples (Matthew, Mark, Luke) • The Church (Acts 2)
1. Understanding God’s Call • Starting point of mission & leadership engagement (e.g. Jesus in Luke 4:18) • Key to how you deal with leadership challenges along the way • Brings a sense of stewardship with what has been entrusted to us “Where the purpose of something is not known, abuse is inevitable”
The Three “C” Approach What is expected of us in this Call?
1.1 Commitment to the Call • Commitment to Jesus Christ • Commitment to His Church • Commitment to the World
1.2. Character “Character is what you are when no one else is watching” • Integrity • Leading by example/ Servanthood • Knowing your limitations • Authenticity – be real/genuine as a leader • Credibility– can you be reliable?
1.3. Competence • Having basic leadership skills • Knowing your responsibility • Understanding pitfalls/traps/failure • Handling tasks “Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness” (John Maxwell)
2. Staying Focused • On your spiritual journey with the Lord • On your area of responsibility • On what is really important • On reaching out to God’s people • On being a blessing
