Description of Housekeeping • Hotel housekeepers must be able to work efficiently and quickly, without invading the guests privacy; should have a neat, clean appearance • Housekeepers handle the routine cleaning of guest sleeping rooms and baths before and after check out • Public places are also cleaned by housekeeping; the lobby areas and hallways • Laundry or linen services are provided by this department
Educational/Salary Requirements • A formal education is not required although employers prefer to hire people with a high school education • Education also includes on-the-job training • The salary that a housekeeper would make per year is $16,900
Career Ladder • This type of career would fall on the lower end of the career ladder since housekeeping reports to the executive housekeeper of the department and its not a career that anyone would want to really do, even though it’s one of the most important positions in the hotel business since it deals with the rooms being clean for the guests.
Interesting Information • This particular career is broken down into a few departments such as inspectors, room attendants, and the laundry service if the hotel offers this amenity. • Some housekeeping employees may only work in the laundry area, washing and drying, and folding these items and then stocking the linen closets
Description of Groundskeepers & Attendants • The groundskeepers maintain and upgrade the exterior of the facility by landscaping the property • Other attendants will oversee the recreational facilities such as pools, tennis courts, and golf courses • If hotels have internal recreational facilities, they will contract out these services to maintain the health clubs or spas
Education/Salary Requirements • Some employers may require some training and an education from a college or vocational school, but many entry-level positions may only require a high school diploma • The salary that a groundskeeper/attendant would make a year would be $27,000
Career Ladder • This type of career would fall in the middle of the career ladder because a groundskeeper is responsible for the hotel’s appearance on the outside that everyone will be looking at and judging whether or not to stay there. The outside appearance of the hotel is very important because that is what guests will be focusing on in their decision on whether to pull up and stay.
