Gandhi’s Influence • Kwame Nkrumah studied nonviolent methods of Gandhi • When he returned to the Gold Coast, he organized boycotts and strikes to battle the British. • He was imprisoned when actions led to riots
Independence • March 6, 1957, Gold Coast won its independence • After his release from prison, Kwame Nkrumah, became prime minister and rename the country Ghana, after the ancient West African Empire.
OAU • In 1963, Nkrumah created the Organization of African Unity or OAU • This group promoted Pan-Africanism and the end of colonialism in Africa
