  2. Modernism Overview • Modernism Overview: Modernism was a philosophical movement occurring in the 19th, and 20th centuries. Modernism arose from wide-scale changes in western society, and the rapid growth of cities. Innovations such as twelve note music, and very abstract artwork also contributed to the understanding, and awe of Modernism. • Literary Devices used in Modernist Poetry: • Symbolism • Metaphor • Onomatopoeia • Imagism • Rhyme scheme • Personification • Simile

Sylvia Plath • October 27, 1932 – February 11, 1963 • First poem appeared in the “Boston Traveler” • she won the Glascock Prize for Two Lovers and a Beachcomber by the Sea. • She admired poets such as Dylan Thomas, W.B Yeats, and Marianne Moore. • early poems exhibit what became her typical imagery, such as the moon, blood, hospitals, fetuses, and skulls. • Plath was often depressed, and it later resulted in suicide.

Robert Hayden • Robert Hayden was raised in the poor neighborhood in Detroit called Paradise Valley. • In 1932, he graduated from high school and, with the help of a scholarship, attended Detroit City College (later Wayne State University). • Hayden published his first book of poems, Heart-Shape in the Dust, in 1940, at the age of 27. • Hayden's poetry gained international recognition in the 1960s and he was awarded the grand prize for poetry at the First World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, Senegal, in 1966 for his book Ballad of Remembrance.

William Carlos Williams • Born September 17, 1883(Died 1963) • Medical degree from University of Pennsylvanis School of Medicine • Poet Associated with Modernism. • May 1963, received Pulitzer Prize for Pictures from Breughel and other poems. • Notable wroks: The Great Figure, The Yachts, Desert Music, The Decent, and Damse Russe
