DELOSNoE-Objectives • Contribute towards improving effectiveness of European research in the DL domain • Provide forum where researchers, practitioners, representatives of interested applications and industries can exchange ideas and experiences • Provide reference point for all EU-funded DL projects where common problems can be discussed, and areas of cooperation identified The DELOS NoE aims at providing a set of “services” for the European DL Community. DELOS NoE - Research Forum • Advance European DL research and encourage scientific collaboration through: • thematic workshops (1st Workshop on “Complex Queries and Relevance Feedback in DLs”, ETH-Zurich, Autumn 2000) • ECDL conference series (ECDL 2000, Lisbon, Portugal, 18-20 Sept.) • international research exchange programme Cultural Heritage Projects Meeting Vienna, 30 June 2000
DELOS NoE -Evaluation Forum • Build publicly available reusable evaluation infrastructures; two different testbeds are being created, maintained and operated: • digital library test suite (linked with US-D-Lib Test Suite initiative run by CNRI) • cross-language system evaluation infrastructure (in collaboration with NIST; continuation and extension of CLIR track at TREC as Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF); 1st evaluation campaign Jan - Sept. 2000; 1st Workshop, 21-22 Sept. 2000, Lisbon) Cultural Heritage Projects Meeting Vienna, 30 June 2000
DELOS NoE -Standardization Forum • Working Group will focus on • deployment of standard metadata schemas • deployment of related infrastructures for publishing, registering, and cross-linking application schemas. • Standardisation Forum is organising a workshop on “How multiple metadata standards can be used in combination” at EC concertation event for Cultural Heritage projects, 30 June, Vienna Cultural Heritage Projects Meeting Vienna, 30 June 2000
DELOS NoE - Technology Transfer • Take-up activities aimed at research, application and industrial communities • International Summer School • focus on the state-of-the-art in selected DL technologies • 1st Summer School, 2001 - Director Prof. Hans Roosendaal, Univ. Twente • Training - technology transfer courses in selected application/commercial environments - tutorials on DL technologies organised in conjunction with international conferences (IFLA, FIAT/IFTA) Cultural Heritage Projects Meeting Vienna, 30 June 2000
DELOS NoE -International Cooperation Three forms of cooperation are planned: • Joint thematic workshops with EU and non-EU participants in order to exchange results and experiences on specific topics • Joint working groups to investigate topics in key areas in order to define a research agenda • Joint research projects with DL communities in N.America, S. DELOS NoE -International Cooperation (cont.) Current activities include: • organisation of exploratory Workshop in conjunction with 2nd All-Russian DL Conference, Protvino Sept. 2000 - discussion of common problems between EU and Russian DL researchers • organisation of a Workshop at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, Nov. 2000 • presentation of state-of-the-art by DELOS invited speakers • evaluation of areas for collaboration between EC-funded groups and partners from non-EU Mediterranean countries Cultural Heritage Projects Meeting Vienna, 30 June 2000
DELOS NoE -International Cooperation (cont.) Agreement for Cooperation on Digital Libraries between EC (5FP-IST-KAIII) and NSF Possible actions for DELOS NoE - in collaboration with NSF: • organisation of dissemination event to launch this agreement • organization of annual DL meetings, alternately in Europe and US, with presentation of DLI and EU projects and joint discussion sessions • creation of joint EU-US working groups on selected topics Cultural Heritage Projects Meeting Vienna, 30 June 2000
DELOS NoE-All-Projects Meeting • The NoE will support concertation activities for all 5th FP-IST DL projects, aimed at facilitating exchanges of experiences and results.
