Learning Objective • To understand the various filmic techniques that you will have to have a deep understanding of when discussing Sherlock.
A word on filmic techniques: • They, broadly speaking, are very similar to the kind of things you talk about in literary texts: characterisation, plot, setting… • You are trying to explain how the techniques contribute meaning to the film or sequence overall.
Who is the authorof a film/TV drama? • Producer? • Director? • Screenwriter?
Characterisation • Characterisation – how the creator makes gives the character depth. • Collect information about the character – what they wear, what they say, what they do, what others say about them – and then work from there.
Representation • Representation is a more broad term, regarding how an idea or type of person, place or thing is represented. • For example, in Sherlock we will look at the representation of the police and of London. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOecpti7Qf8 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_CWXOQNGIk
Mise-en-scene • ‘Putting into the scene’ en Francais. • Means everything visual in the scene. • Camera* • Set • Costume* • Use of space • Colour • Lighting*
Task • Discuss the mise-en-scene in this scene: • How does the director create meaning?
Narrative • Montage – shows a passage of time. Images edited together and usually accompanied by music. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfG-Eef_pdM
Narrative • You will often talk about narrative structure – this deals with the order in which the story is told.
Narrative • Key concepts of narrative: • Todorov – theory of equilibrium • Freytag – story structure diagram • Enigma/Revelation
Narrative • Todorov – common structure: normality (equilibrium) – disruption of normality – return to normality. • Freytag – common structure: exposition – rising action – climax – falling action – denouement
Narrative • Enigma– text throws up some questions that maintain interest until they are answered.
