Test Taking Tip 1 • Learn how to take a multiple choice test.
Test Taking Tip 2 • Repetition is important in math. You learn how to solve problems by doing them so keep on practicing problems but don't do it blindly. Make sure you learn how to recognize when/why you should use a specific method to solve a problem. • IXL can help you hone in on what you need to practice.
Test Taking Tip 3 • Understand Grid Items • Constructed Response Practice.
Test Taking Tip 4 • Be organized. Make a list of tools that would be helpful as you practice and then use that list to get organized when getting ready to take the test. • Make sure you have all the tools you need — calculator, ruler, manipulatives, scratch paper, sharp pencils, erasers. Don't forget to use them!
Test Taking Tip 5 Take Responsibility • This is your education and your future. • Your teachers and parents have already passed this grade.
Test Taking Tip 6 • Check Your Work (Reread the whole problem. • Look at the question and see if your answer matches what the question is asking. • Use inverse operation and then verify with a calculator and the formula sheet on OAKS.
Test Taking Tip 7 Analyze how you did on a similar test in the past. • Review sample tests provided by your teacher. • Each test you take prepares you for the next one! • Celebrate the areas you are solid in. • Set goals for shaky areas to work on
Test Taking Tip 8 • Take good care of yourself. • Be sure you get a good night’s sleep before taking the test. • Eat a healthy meal before you take the test (breakfast, snack, or lunch), and drink plenty of water.
Test Taking Tip 10 • You can talk with your class or partner about possible strategies and tools that might be helpful to use to solve problems. • While taking a practice test, if you get feedback that you've missed an item, talk to a partner about why the identified correct solution is correct. • Tell each other what you think should be done to solve the problem and what tools might be used to help work it through and verify the solution.
Test Taking Tip 11 Don't Dilly Dally • If you get stuck on a problem move on and come back to it later. • When you are finished, recheck all your work.
Test Taking Tip 12 Use Self Control • Try to work as quietly as possible to support everyone being able to do his or her best.
Test Taking Tip 13 Stay Calm • Remember to relax and THINK. You have learned the mathematics needed for you to do well on the test. • If you see a problem you don’t remember how to work, take a breath, read it again, and do your best. • There is no penalty for guessing wrong, but if you don’t answer a question, you can’t get it right.
Test Taking Tip 14 Double check your math, especially your calculator entries • Double check your calculator work immediately. • The chances of hitting a wrong number are high, but the chances of hitting the same wrong number are not
