History of York • founded by the Romans in 71 AD • the capital of the Roman province Britannia Inferior • Middle Ages - a major wool trading centre • 19th century – a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre • the University of York and health services - major employers now • tourism - an important element of the local economy

  4. Geography • York –in a flat area of fertile arable land • the city was built at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss • prone to flooding from the River Ouse - walls along the Ouseand a liftable barrier across the River Foss 

  5. Must-see atractions in York • York Minster • Clifford’s Tower • Railway Museum • Yorkshire Museum

  6. York Minster • one of the largest cathedrals of its kind in Northern Europe. • the title "minster" is attributed to churches established in the Anglo-Saxon period as missionary teaching churches

  7. Clifford’s Tower • originally built by William the Conqueror • panoramic views from the top of the towerover the historic city of York

  8. National Railway Museum • National Railway Museum - the story of the rail transport in Britain • home of the national collection of historically significant railway vehicles

  9. Yorkshire Museum • home of the Cawood sword – the finest Viking sword ever found • four permanent collections - biology, geology, archaeology and  astronomy
