History of York • founded by the Romans in 71 AD • the capital of the Roman province Britannia Inferior • Middle Ages - a major wool trading centre • 19th century – a hub of the railway network and a confectionery manufacturing centre • the University of York and health services - major employers now • tourism - an important element of the local economy
Geography • York –in a flat area of fertile arable land • the city was built at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss • prone to flooding from the River Ouse - walls along the Ouseand a liftable barrier across the River Foss
