Mission of the NMHS • Mission: • To improve the quality and expand the variety of services provided • To advance the science of meteorology by acquiring the best of technology and training and by having a happy and contented staff to meet tomorrow’s challenges adequately • To provide Meteorological information advice consistent with international standards towards the pursuit of national, scientific, social economic and cultural goals and sustainable development

Responsibilities of the NMHS • Responsible for providing SIGMET’s for our Flight Information Region (FIR) • Responsible for providing Terminal Aerodome Forecast TAF’s aviation • Responsible for providing Tsunami alerts • Responsible for providing hurricane watches and warnings • Responsible for providing weather bulletins for country

  5. Major Meteorological Disaster Events • Hurricane: • Flora 1963 • Made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane • Winds of 193km/h • Damaging and/or destroying 6,250 houses • Property and crop damage amounting to $3 million TTD • 18 lives lost

  6. Major Meteorological Disaster Events • Alma 1974 • Made landfall as a category hurricane • Winds of • Damaging and/or destroying 3,000 houses • Property and crop damage amounting to $17,750 TTD • 50,000 people affected • Two (2) lives lost

  7. Major Meteorological Disaster Events • Bret 1993 • Made landfall on Trinidad • Winds of 44 km/h • Property and crop damage amounting to $4 million TTD • NO LIVES LOST

  8. Major Meteorological Disaster Events • Passage of Tropical Waves • Seasonal event • Generally producing large amounts of rainfall • Resulting in flooding

Staff Composition • The staff composition of the Trinidad & Tobago Meteorological Service as relates to observation and data collection/processing is made-up of • Twenty-two (22) staff members • Eighteen (18) members responsible for making observation • Four (4) members responsible for data collection/processing

WIGOS Implementation Status • Status of the WMO-reported national observing networks • Presently TTMS has • Two (2) manual observing station • Eight (8) automation observing stations • The TTMS has an existing organizational database that is used catalog our observing networks • The TTMS data and metadata are accessible and is shared

Major needs and gaps in observing capabilities and access • The TTMS needs and gaps as it relates to our observing capabilities and access are • To increase our observing network since there are only eight (8) automatic weather observing stations • To upgrade the present database hardware and software components • WMO can help by providing any assistance with respect to Training of personnel in weather observing practices and procedures • RA-IV and Members can help

  12. Plans for the National Observing Networks • TTMS is in the process of installing an Automatic Weather Observing System (AWOS) at the aerodome • TTMS is in the process of making arrangment for the addition of new AWS

  13. WIGOS Implementation Status • Presently TTMS has not updated its National WIGOS Implementation plan/strategy • Yes! TTMS is planning to create and execute a strategy? • What are our training needs? • Any training that would be required

WIGOS Implementation Status • Do you have any agreements with your partners? • Presently TTMS does NOT any agreements with respect to our WIGOS implementation • Can partners discover and access your data? • Our partners can easily access and discover our data. • TTMS has just recently adopted An Open Data Policy

  15. WIGOS Implementation Status • TTMS has implemented an operational Quality Management System for our National Observing system • TTMS is documenting all of its operational and maintenance processes for the present observing systems and it is monitoring its implementation

  16. Summary The introduction and full implementation of the WIGOS would service as excellent tool for the TTMS Any and all training that can access for the implementation of the WIGOS at TTMS is always welcome
