  1. Security Tips for Closing Your Business at the End of the Day Develop a Strategy to Keep Your Business Safe If your business is like most, closing time is a rush of activity. Between last-minute customers and wrapping up the end of the business day, it's easy to neglect essential security procedures when you're getting ready to leave the office. While hiring a security guard to monitor your site during the quiet hours is an ideal strategy to protect your business, there are some other steps you can add to your closing routine. Following these steps will help your staff and business remain as secure as possible. 1) Establish an End-of-Day Checklist One way to help employees (and yourself) stay accountable for taking the proper precautions during closing time is to start a daily checklist for end-of-day procedures. Create a bullet-point list with necessary tasks like: •Log out of computer systems •Lock all doors •Set the building's security alarm Ask employees to sign off on these lists each day to help build a routine and responsibility for protecting your business. 2) Check Twice for Customers An item you'll want to add to your checklist is thoroughly checking your site for any remaining customers, even when it appears no one else is in the building. Be sure to double check areas like restrooms and closets to make sure no one is left in an out-of-sight spot. Some intruders take advantage of these hiding spaces, waiting until all employees are gone for the day before heading for the valuables. 3) Lock All Doors and Windows

  2. Ensure that all front, side, and back doors are locked. Establish a routine for systematically checking that every door is locked, even when rarely used. No business owner wants to realize they've lost merchandise and had customer confidentiality compromised because an employee left a literal open door for intruders. The same idea goes for windows. Check all windows, including ones you don't think anyone opened, before heading out for the day just to be certain they are tightly locked over night. 4) Keep Valuables Out of Sight When a location is burglarized, it makes sense that intruders will try to flee the scene as soon as possible. Storing valuables like laptops and other electronics in a safe or locked filing cabinet can be an effective deterrent. These additional locks will be an extra layer of protection against theft. Likewise, important information such as passwords and alarm codes should only be stored in similarly secure places. Doing so helps protect your cyber data just as much as your physical property. 5) Leave the Building in Pairs Another precaution that you and your staff should consider is leaving your building each day in pairs, especially when it's dark outside. Using the buddy system at the end of the day can prevent employees from walking to a darkly lit parking deck alone. Sticking in pairs also provides a second set of eyes for ensuring the doors are properly locked and completely closed for the rest of the day.
