International Legal Education Abroad Conference Creating and Maintaining Quality in Programs Abroad April 2, 2012
Efficiencies and Challenges in Creating Quality Curriculum Jennifer Henderson Director, Canadian & American Dual JD Program, JD/LED Program University of Detroit Mercy School of Law
Introduction: • What are the elements of a quality curriculum? • How do those elements change in the international context? • Are certain models better suited for different modes of delivery, i.e., semester abroad, year abroad, study at a foreign institution?
Efficiencies: • Faculty • Incentives • Fellowships/grants • Delivering in one context • Course sequencing • Material development
Fundamental Goals & Learning Outcomes Students in dual degree programs should graduate with the ability to, among other things: • Understand the underlying assumptions of the legal traditions represented in the program • Identify, analyze, and resolve legal problems in a foreign legal system
Better Approach Delivery--Content What To Avoid Simply giving a “laundry list” of the differences or similarities between legal traditions Core content Focus on underlying assumptions of legal tradition Compare & contrast approaches to highlight these assumptions
Delivery-Administrative • Curriculum Committee • Faculty Co-Chairs • Executive Committee • Management Committee • Advisory Board
Challenges: • ABA standards • Last year’s conference, working group’s submission • Faculty • Participation • Cohesive educational plan • Location • Lack of resources • Educational materials • Technology
Achieving the Result • Faculty Selection • Patience • Learning Outcomes Explicitly Stated • Timing & Scheduling
Achieving the Result • Academic Calendar Coordination • Course Schedule Coordination • Courses • Professors • Faculty Teaching Loads
