ROS Step by Step
Getting Started • ROS determination is based on the transportation system and topography (specifically, slope)
Step 1 • Classify routes as improved, primitive or non-motorized. Better than Primitive Routes Primitive Motorized Routes Non-motorized Routes
Step 1 • To reduce computational time, clip routes to those within 3 miles of project area.
Step 2 • Prepare a slope raster (percent) and 2 route rasters- improved roads and, all motorized routes.
Step 2 (continued) • Prepare a cost raster for travel from primitive motorized routes • (slope / 3).
Step 2 (continued) • Prepare a second cost raster for travel from improved routes. • (slope / 3)
Step 3 • Compute costdistance raster for improved roads.
Step 3 (cont) • Compute a second costdistance raster for all motorized routes.
Step 4 • Reclassify the costdistance raster for improved roads into preliminary zones.
Step 4 (cont) • Reclassify the costdistance raster for all motorized routes into preliminary zones.
Step 4 (cont) • Combine the reclassified maps. • Areas of difference define SPM and compromised SPNM.
Step 5 • Using all motorized routes, determine route density using focal function.
Step 5 (cont) rural • Reclassify the route density into Rural, Urban and Other classes. urban
Step 6 • Combine the density classes with the cost mapping. • Assign draft ROS classes.
Step 7 • Develop combined PR / SPNM polygons. • PR and SPNM can be undersized when there are adjoining areas.
Step 7 (cont) • Develop combined SPM / SPNM polygons. • SPM can be undersized when there are adjoining SPNM areas.
Step 7 (cont) • Add the expanded area values to the draft ROS zones.
Step 8 • Make final designations based on sizes and adjacent areas.
Classify RN. • Classify U & R. • Classify SPM > 2500 • Classify SPM < 2500 • Reclassify SPM < 400 as RN
Classify SPNM > 2500 • Classify SPNM < 2500 • Reclassify SPNM < 2500 to SPM • Reclassify SPNM < 2500 to RN • Reclassify SPNM < 400 to RN
Classify PR > 5000 • Classify PR < 5000 adjacent to SPNM • Reclassify PR < 1000 adjacent to SPNM to SPNM • Reclassify PR < 1000 not adjacent to SPNM to RN
Step 9 • Dissolve on ROS value • Clip to Boundary • Review Results
