“Bangkok Diesel Retrofit Demonstration Project” Panya Warapetcharayut Director of Automotive Air Pollution Section Air Quality and Noise Management Bureau Pollution Control Department Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment Email: panya.w@pcd.go.th
Presentation Outline • Objectives • Retrofit Devices • Current Status • Vehicle specification • Emission Testing Laboratory • Test Cycle • DOC Trial • Emission Testing Results • DPF/PFF Trial • Emission Testing Results • Project Plan • Conclusion
Objectives • Convene diesel retrofit stakeholder working group • Identify appropriate fleets to test retrofit technologies • Facilitate private sector technology demonstrations • Complete retrofit testing and analysis, including costs and health benefits • Formulate improved policies, and complete action plan for technology adoption and dissemination • Major Partners • PCD • USEPA • USAID/PADCO • Johnson Matthey • Engelhard • Major Fleets in Bangkok
CO CO 2 Reduced PM PM HC H O 2 • Retrofit Devices Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) Advanced DPF Partial Flow Filter (PFF) • PM Reduction > 85% • HC & CO reduction > 80% • Low exh. Temp.(200-250 C) • Low NOx/PM ratio (>15) • Use 50ppm S content fuel - PM Reduction > 50% - HC & CO reduction > 50% - Use 50 ppm S contentfuel • PM Reduction 20-30% • CO Reduction > 40% • HC Reduction > 50% • Use 350ppm S content fuel
Current Status 5 Trash trucks Installed 18 DOCs • 14 Heavy duty diesel vehicles • 4 Light duty diesel vehicles 4 School buses 5 Fixed route buses
Entire cycle is 1800s, each part is 600s. Part one represents city driving with average speed of 22.91 km/h, frequent starts, stops, and idling. Part two is rural driving starting with a steep acceleration segment. The average speed is about 72 km/h Part three is motorway driving with average speed of about 88 km/h. Test Cycles European Transient Cycle (ETC)
Test Cycles Bangkok Cycle The transient cycle is 768s, represents driving cycle in Bangkok with an average speed of 13.86 km/h, frequent starts, stops, and idling.
DOC Trial 6. Tested emission without DOC in same day 1. Measured exhaust temperature Design 2. Designed DOC Uninstall DOC 5. Test Emissionwith DOC 3. Installed DOC 4. Run vehicles for 1 year
Emission Testing Results DOC installed in School Buses
Emission Testing Results DOC installed in BMTA Bus
DPF/PFF Trial 7. Tested emission without DPF/PFF in same day and install back again Design 1. Measured exhaust temperature 2. Designed DPF/PFF Uninstall DPF/PFF 6. Test Emissionwith DPF/PFF 3. Installed DPF/PFF 4. Installed backpressure alarm 5. Run vehicles for 1 week
Emission Testing Results DPF installed in BMTA Bus
Condition of retrofitted vehicles should be fitted with manufacturer requirement and US-EPA standard Vehicle must be well-maintained, or followed normal manufacturer recommended maintenance schedule. Fuel selection, must consider sulfur content which may increase emissions and decrease devices efficiency. Conclusion Selection Criteria for Retrofitted Vehicles
