  1. Results of ENA Observations - Planetary Observations (1) Suk-Kyung Sung 26 Sep. 2009.

  2. History of ENA Observations - Earth • IMP-7, 8 and ISEE 1 (1970s) • EPE (Energetic Particle Experiment) on IMPs and MEPI (Medium Energy Particle Instrument) on ISEE 1 observed ENA emission. • AMPTE-CCE (1984) • CHEM (Charge-Energy-Mass) Spectrometer • Geotail (1992) • EPIC (Energetic Particles and Ion Composition) Instrument • HEP (High Energy Particle) Experiment

  3. History of ENA Observations - Earth • Astrid (1995) • Swedish Micro Satellite • PIPPI (prelude in planetary particle imaging) • 5 weeks measurements (Jan. – Feb.) • Polar (1996) • CEPPAD (Comprehensive Energetic Particle Pitch Angle Distribution) • IMAGE (2000) • HENA (High Energy Neutral Atom Imager) • MENA (Medium Energy Neutral Atom Imager) • LENA (Low Energy Neutral Atom Imager)

  4. History of ENA Observations - Planets • Cassini mission to Saturn/Titan (1997) • INCA (Ion and Neutral Camera) : a part of the Magnetosphere Imaging Instrument (MIMI) • MEX (Mars Express, 2003) and VEX (Venus Express, 2005) • ASPERA-3, 4 (Analyser of Space Plasmas and Energetic Atoms)

  5. Presentation Plan • MEX (Mars Express) • VEX (Venus Express) • Cassini • Venus • Earth • Jupiter and satellites • Saturn and satellites • ENAs from the Heliosheath

  6. MEX – Mars Express • Launch • 2 June 2003 • Arrival at Mars • December 2003

  7. MEX – Mars Express • Two different ENA sensors (ASPERA-3) • NPI (Neutral Particle Imager): An ENA imager with high angular resolution, but with no mass and energy resolution - Milillo et al., P&SS, 2009 • NPD (Neutral Particle Detector): a neitral mass analyser that can resolve both particle velocities and masses, with lower angular resolution - Galli et al., JGR, 2008

  8. MEX – NPI result • A signal coming from look directions close to the Mars terminator toward the nightside has been identified. • MSO is similar to GSE coordinates

  9. MEX – NPI result • No systematic IMF clock angle dependence is evident.

  10. MEX – NPI result • Planetographic-coordinate maps show no relation with the magnetic anomalies
