Role of Multiple Stake Holders in Strengthening National Identity & Nation Building K.Somasundram Malaysian Trades Union Congress
“Forging National Identity, My Malaysia” • It has been identified that after 48 years of independence, we have not fully achieved National Unity in the true sense. • This plainly means we the stake holders present here, the Law and policy makers and the people responsible to implement them have failed in our duties the achieve National unity. What could have gone wrong?
Bonds & Unity • In my view bonds unity and race integration, 48 years ago was better than, it is now. • Let us go back to 1957 and review the present, if we seriously mean business • Let us see “LEADERS OF MALAYA AND WHO IS WHO 1959 – 1960 ” by: J. Victor Morais • First published in 1956.
Tunku Abdul Rahman PutraIn the book leaders of Malaya; • An article in the London Sunday Times said, “He is a simple, and friendly man who unburdens his soul to anyone, of any status, sincerely interested in the future of Malaya.” • The New Commonwealth magazine Under the heading “ Profile of Great Leader” said, “ The Secret of his success lies perhaps in a genuine sincerity towards friends and an honest approach to political problems, with courage and perseverance.”
The Federation of Armed Forces • 1932 formation of the Royal Malay regiment • 1939 the Royal Navy began as a Malay section in 1939 later RMN in 1952. • 1958 Royal Malayan Air Force was formed • 1960’s Royal Malaysia Police had 22,000 men and women of many races, is it today with 90,277 personnel and the civil service with almost 1 million staffs are the equally represented.
Unity and Solidarity in Schools • Integration among school children at the lowest level right up to institution of higher learning should be the main agenda of the day. They will be our future leaders • Students in schools seems to follow their peers reason are: similar interest , background, religious belief. • Reason seem to be fear and suspicion
The New economic policy • It had two prongs; not only help to eradicate poverty but also serve the objective of correcting racial economic imbalance. • National unity has several facets. • Social and cultural, political and economical, public and private, emotional and psychological factors.
The New economic policy • National unity is unattainable without greater equity and balance among Malaysia’s social and ethnical groups in their participation in the development of the country and in sharing of the benefits from modernization and economic growth. • Signed by: the late Prime Minister Tun Abdula Razak Bin Dato’ Hussein 25th June 1971
P.M. Fine tune policies to eradicate poverty in five years, 17.April 2004
The Parliament Heart of the Nation Sun, 25th June. 2002 • The late Speaker, Tun Zahir Ismail, advised the voters to know how to choose wisely and elect a responsible government. “It must be realised that parliament is the heart of the nation. It is where laws are made for judiciary to interpret and where the government of the country.”
P.M’’s reminder 29.Oct.05 Ungentlemanly conduct • Its sad to see that racial slur has reached the heart of the nation. The learned M.P. was not even referred to the committee of privileges or disciplined.
Aliran reports • Greed was the agenda of the day. • When the call was made to renew NEP, complete with keris and all, there was no doubt: greed was the agenda of the day! • The report also said, if, say a group of Chinese had presented what they called’ the Chinese agenda’ as a candidate for national agenda’, there would be – and correctly so howls of protest.
Possible Causes • It is, our political structure and the behaviour of all the politicians in the country, including the ruling government. • It has the power and authority, with an overwhelming majority, they are in the best position to bring change. • There is no need to play racial politics for survival. “again it’s man and priorities”
Human Rights in Islam by: The Islamic Foundation U.K., 1976 • Islam is not only recognises absolute equality between men, irrespective of any distinction of colour, race or nationality, • It other words all human beings are brothers to one another. • They are descendants from one father and one mother, “ And we set you up as nations and tribes so that you may be able to recognise each other” (49:13).
Islam Hadhari “The PRINCIPLES” • A Just and Trustworthy Government • A free and independent people • A good quality of life; • Protection of the rights of minority • Moral and integrity • We need to seriously address the distinction between political interest and national interest.
Remedies • Equal Opportunities should be given to all the identified poor on ownership of houses. • More opportunities to be given to the needy at all levels of government funded public schools and Institution of higher education. • Activating the Rukun Tetangga • We as parents should educate our own children to enjoy diversity and not tolerance.
We are the pilot of the ship and we shall decide our destiny TERIMA KASIH & MOHON MAAF ATAS SEGALA KESILAPAN SAYA.
