Collection of Data • European Statistics on accidents at work (ESAW): • economic activity of the employer • occupation of the victim • age, sex and nationality of the victim • type of injury • part of body injured • geographical location of the accident • date and time of the accident • size and economic activity of the employer • days lost • working environment and working process • description of the accident

  13. What are we looking at? Data of the Austrian Workers´ Compensation Board accidents at work, commuting accidents Statistik Data-ware-house accidents of pupils occupational diseases pensions caused by .. employees, self-employed enterprises schools follow-up costs for accidents at work

  14. Incidence Rates Incidence Rates by Eurostat + economic activity, severity and age or sex + fatal accidents: economic activity, member state and age + economic activity and size of the enterprise

Differences in Reporting Procedures • insurance based systems (public or private) – 10 Member States + Switzerland • - very high reporting level • sometimes up to 100% reporting level • legal obligation of the employer to notify the accidents to the relevant national authorities (Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, United Kingdom) + Norway • economic incentive for notifying accidents at work is not very strong • 30 to 50% reporting level • WEIGHTING

Aims of Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2007 • Analysis according to Labour Market variables not available in ESAW and EODS • Accidents at work: • Cases with less than 4 days absence • Sectors and groups not fully covered by ESAW • asessments of the ESAW reporting levels • Work-related health problems • frequency and burden(absence) of diseases only partially caused by work or made worse by work • frequency of new emerging types of occupational diseases not yet included in the list of occupational diseases (esp musculoskeletal and psychosocial health problems)
