Research • When students can recall the facts with automaticity and accuracy, they make fewer mistakes and reach higher math levels in their secondary and post secondary schooling. • Algebra is a gateway to higher-level math and later achievement. • Building blocks to success in algebra include fluency with whole numbers with a strong grounding in number sense. • It is crucial for students to master their facts to allow for concentration on higher-level and more complex concepts and skills.
Research • Technology is changing our society at an accelerated rate. • Our educational system must change to incorporate digital tools and advances so that learning and, consequently, student achievement, improve to meet the demands of an increasingly technical society. • Traditional drills and flashcards do not appeal to the digital learners of today. Practicing math facts with iTouch applications motivates students, and subsequently, increases their practice time and accuracy. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjKRQDjQ58I&feature=youtube_gdata_player
My study looked at the impact of using the iTouches on fluency as compared to previous years’ classes without the iTouches. It was broadened to include looking at the impact of use as intervention. • Money - 6 iTouches • Classroom Management Color Coded teams App talks • Fluency Tests Weekly Fluency tests – 5 min drills % Fluent, beginning and end of year • Ohio Achievement data • Surveys Students Parents
Results - Math Achievement Class Year Beginning End Math % Fluency % Fluency OAA- Mean 2007/2008 18% 68% 432 2008/2009 18% 64% 434 2009/2010 19% 65% 452 2010/2011 18% 77% 462
Results - Intervention Note :The vertical black line indicates the date when daily intervention with the iTouches started.
Summary • The motivational factors of using technology made a significant difference in the amount of time students spent reviewing multiplication and division math facts in my class last year. • Automatic recall of math facts can and does improve math performance. • The increased practice time resulted in higher student math achievement overall. • Most importantly, this study proved that these devices can be powerful intervention tools.
