Operating Systems • Program for managing system resources • controls interaction with user • sharing of memory/disk, communications, etc. • Example Operating Systems • Unix, MSDOS, Mac, IBM, Windows... • Windows offers • use of relatively cheap hardware • standard user-interface • & standard programmer interface!
Starting Windows • Windows 95 • machine normally on! Enter login name(e.g. david@ug) • & password(upper/lower case!) then click OK must be “pclabs”
Windows, up and running... The Desktop • Start Button • (run frequently used programs) • Task Bar • (currently running programs)
Running Programs click START... click PROGRAMS... click the program you want...
Switching between Programs • Use several programs at the same time! • Each program runs in its own “Window”(region of screen) • Task bar shows running programs Click the progam you want to use

Using Menus • Use Mouse • click on option • sub-options appear • click on desired one • Use Keyboard • Underlined letter • Alt-E, Alt-P • Specific shortcut • Ctrl-V
Stopping Windows • Windows 95 • select Shutdown from Start menu • Click “Close all programs and log on as a different user?” then “Yes” DO NOT switch the machine off
Storing Information (1) • Physical Media • types • Disks • hard or floppy • cdrom • tape • etc… • characteristics • fixed or removable, read only, volatile, speed, cost, ...
Floppy disks write protect notch label • Use of… • Format • first use ONLY! • Write protect insertthis wayround • Care of, avoid... • liquids & dust • elec-mag. fields
Storing Information (2) • Files • Folders (directories = folders) • Folders in Folders in … • Tip • name files and directories, meaningfully! • filename extensions…( filename.ext e.g. friends.txt, output.prn, david.pic )
Storing Information (3) • Your computer may have many storage devices attached… • Each device has a single “root” folder • The root folder contains other files and folders.
File Dialogs • Used when opening or saving work... Select device folder press OK filename
Windows Explorer • Use to format disks, create new folders, browse, find files, run programs, copy, move, rename & delete files & folders... Files & sub-foldersof selectedfolder All devices &sub-folders
The Clipboard • Temporary storage area • Use to transfer information • within programs • between programs clipboard Copy Paste Cut
Printing... • Select “Print” option in application • usually “File|Print…” or icon Select the printer in your current location Press “OK”
Online Help... • Select “Start|Help” for general windows info. • Use “Help” menu option in programs
