Standards • A1.1.6 Simplify numerical expressions, including those involving radicals and absolute value.
What does it mean? Evaluating is a type of simplifying. It is where you turn it into a single, numerical answer. EXAMPLE:Evaluate for x when x=3 X+ 9 ----------------- (3) + (9) = 12
Substitution • If all variables are given a value, we can solve Y = + y + 2*2* =
Bases and Exponents 2 3 * 3 = 9 3 Base Exponent Multiply your base BY ITSELF the amount of the exponent.
ponent The NEX is ON the base.
Squared Let’s say each side is 3 ft Side 2 3*3 = 9 Side 1 Now, INCLUDE UNITS Side * Side = Side2 9 ft2 or 9 square feet
Cubed Let’s say each side is 2 cm 2*2*2 = 8 Side 2 Side 1 Side 3 Now, INCLUDE UNITS Side * Side * Side = Side3 8 ft3 or 8 cubic cm
So just remember……. If something is “cubed” It’s 3-d….to the third power 3 cubed = 33 If something is “squared” It’s 2-d….to the SECOND power 3 squared = 32
Order • G -Grouping • E - Exponent • M - Multiplication • D -Division • A -Addition • S -SubtractionGood effort makes daily acts satisfying!
Grouping These include: ( ), [ ], | |, Fraction Bar 4+5 (4+5) (9) 3 1+2 (1+2) (3)
Grouping If you have parenthesis INSIDE a parenthesis, you start with the inner-most and go outwards. [-3 * (4+2) ]
Exponent • If you have an exponent to a parenthesis, do what is in the parenthesis first. THEN use that as your base. (4-2)3 (2)3 8
Multiplication/Division • Always do from left to right. • Multiplication and Division…..Are the same!!!! 4 *
Multiplication/Division • Do you see any multiplication here? -4 4
Addition/Subtraction • Always do from left to right. • Addition and subtraction….are the same!!! 8 – (-3)
Addition/Subtraction • Do you see any addition/subtraction here? 3
Exponent Do you know the difference between: (-2)2 And -22
