  6. In Marisol’s street, there was an empty lot that was filled with garbage and broken things. It had a bad smell. One morning, Marisol was surprised to see many people busy with cleaning the empty lot. They carried the garbage away and prepared the ground for plants. They told her that flowers usually die in winter and that she can save the seeds and plant them again next spring. Marisol was too sad to go again to the empty lot. 10 1

  7. Soon it was very cold, and people started to pick up their fruit and vegetables. But something bad was happening to Marisol’s flower. The leaves changed into brown and became dry. Marisol watered and watered her flower, but the leaves began to fall. “What should I do?” She cried. “We will call it The Garden of Happiness,” Mr. Singh said. “I am planting a beautiful plant, it’s lavender and red.” On another day, Marisol came to the empty lot and watched the people working. She inhaled the fresh smell of spring in the soil. 9 2

  8. A woman was walking quickly on the way, but she skidded to see the sunflower. And all summer long, the sunflower made the people on the street stop and smile. The sunflower was very shiny and Marisol thought that it was the happiest plant in The Garden of Happiness. “ Oh, I want to plant something in the Garden of Happiness!” Marisol said. But they told her that she was too late and they took all the pieces of land. Marisol looked and looked everywhere until she saw a very small peace of land outside the fence. It was the size of her hand but she was very happy, and she started to clean it up. 8 3

  9. Marisol noticed some children across the street looking at a wall. She walked there to ask what they were doing. “We want to make a mural on the wall but we don’t know what to draw,” they said. “I’m also making a garden and I don’t know what to plant.” Marisol said. By the end of July Marisol’s plant grew over her head and she couldn’t wait to know what her plant was. One morning, Marisol saw something wonderful down the street. She ran quickly to see what this thing was. A very big flower stood higher than all the plants in the garden! It was yellow and gold. It was a sunflower! 7 4

  10. Every day that spring, Marisol watered her seed and took care of it until it became as high as her knee. All the green plants were growing everywhere in the garden. But Marisol didn’t know the name or the kind of her plant. She asked the people all the time: “Do you know what my plant is? What’s it going to be?” In The Garden of Happiness, people were planting their seeds, but Marisol had no seeds to plant. She went to the corner where she saw some birds eating big seeds and took one for her garden. Then she jumped quickly to her small piece of land. She made a hole with her finger and put in the seed. 6 5
