Wildcards • Use wildcards to find variant spellings of a term • * replaces one or more characters • patent* finds: patent, patents, patentable, patented • ? replaces one character • ne?t finds: neat, nest and next • fib?? finds : fiber and fibre • Wildcards may be combined: • wom?n* finds: woman, women, women’s and womanhood

  3. Valid* * replaces 1 or more characters

  4. f?rm ? replaces one character

  5. Sometimes wildcards are not needed: • Variant spellings are searched automatically: • labor finds labor and labour • labour finds labor and labour • Entering a term in the singular will automatically also find the plural (but not the other way round) • pattern finds pattern and patterns • woman finds woman and women
