Lesson 2 Ancient Indians
Hunters and Gatherers 6,000 – 10,000 years ago the Ice Age was over! Most Indians needed mammoths and mastodons to survive. They ate the meat, used the fur, skin and bones to make clothes, shelter and tools.
All time was spent finding the animals and gathering fruits/nuts. These nomads never had a permanent home. People lived in caves or built animal-skin tents. Tools and weapons were made from stone and bone.
A Time of Change The Ice Age was over because the climate changed. The weather was warmer! The giant animals became extinct. Now they had to fish and hunt smaller animals. They also had to learn how to grow food.
Agriculture Agriculture = farming First foods grown: beans, squash, maize (corn) Since people could grow food they could start permanent villages and tribes.
Early Civilizations • People started developing governments, religion and learning. • Things Invented: • Calendars • Numbers • Writing • Trading • Slavery • Sports
