  5. Causes (cont’d.) • World War I • brewers (German) were hated; • grain needed for war • Weak organization of opponents • Support of KKK • Propaganda Posters

Effects (short-term) • Passage of Eighteenth amendment • “Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all the territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.” (US Constitution)

  7. Effects (long-term) • Eighteenth amendment • Led to increase in unregulated/untaxed alcohol • Organized crime • Violence • Corruption • Repealed in 1933 by 21st amendment. • Sin tax
