EMPTINESS OF SOUL “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, Vanity of vanities! All is vanity…I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and striving after wind” (Eccl. 1:2, 14).
An Unfillable Void… • When viewed from our “under the sun” standpoint. • Work will fill up a day, but not a life. • Vacation will fill up a week, but not a life. • Family will fill up a decade (or two) but won’t make a life. • Solomon had it all, and had seen it all, and is still frustrated. • Now, he shares his study with us. And his conclusion.
Wisdom Is Not Enough • 1:13; 9:13-18 • The outcome is “vexation”. • You can’t teach people anything. You can’t even control yourself. • All teachers, preachers, parents experience this. • 1:14, 17-18. • We can be wise, and empty.
Mirth and Pleasure are Not Enough • 2:1, 10 • Movies, TV, “going out”, can be pleasant, but not lasting fulfillment. • Collect art, or stamps, or string. • Outcome is vanity. • 2:11 • You can have a “good time” or a great one, and still be empty.
Wine and Song Aren’t Enough • 2:3, 8 • Yet we still try. The “party atmosphere”. • A little “tipsy”, with relaxed inhibitions would be wonderful. • Or NOT. • There’s no stopping place. • Outcome is Vanity and Sorrow. • 2:11; 6:26; 7:26
Work Is Not Enough • 2:4-7 • As important as it is: 3:13; 2:24; 5:19 • Men and women find “identity” in their labor. • But who are we, really? Am I just a preacher? • Work has wonderful benefits, but it won’t fill your soul
What is Enough? • 12:13 • “Fear God and keep his commandments; for this is the whole of man. • 11:8-12:1 • Enjoy life, but remember… • Only God can fill a soul.
