Who is BH&A …… and what do we do? • Small, specialist consultancy in incapacity / disability and risk claims / insurance matters (LT) • Focus areas are: • Disability / incapacity issues in the employer / employee environment • Disability / incapacity assessments in the insurance domain • Assessment of injuries / disability / incapacity in the litigation arena – MVA; medical negligence; prof. indemnity and public liability; risk / insurance litigation • Claims assessments in the risk domain, mostly second opinions and disputed claims decisions • Claims ‘audits’; contract / policy wording; claims training … • Special projects, mostly research • EBH - financial crisis intervention and management at shop floor level for an international company, part of a global team

Our national team • Based in Cape Town • Franchise office in Johannesburg • Associates based in Port Elizabeth, Durban and Bloemfontein • All work is handled by and channelled through either the Cape Town or Johannesburg office • 7 Occupational Therapists in total in the team • Widely networked - pull in other expertise as and when needed across the country • 2014 will be BH&A’s 10th of operation - with EBH and LAB having a combined 40+ years of expert experience and the combined team being geriatric in years of experience

Why today’s topics? • Debt – and employee debt - is becoming epidemic, with half of our workforce being ‘bankrupt’ at the end of each month … • Claims decisions are not always ‘black and white’ – new methods for fair determination and decisions are required … • The legal environment has changed – more options are available to more people via Class Actions …

  5. How does this tie up? • Debt = EAO’s; ill-health; depression; lost productivity; increased wage demands; retrenchments … Meyer will tell you more • Incapacity / claims mediation = the provision of solutions when an incapacity or claims decision is not a simple yes or no … Jacques will tell you more • Class actions = reckless lending; EAO’s out of hand; specific benefit and insurance management issues … the experts will tell you more
