The Brunswick Fire Company No. 1 enforces a drug-free workplace policy in compliance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988. Violations result in suspension and possible termination. Regular training and reviews are conducted.

04-20Drug Free Workplace • The Brunswick Fire Company No. 1 shall promote a drug-free workplace for its Firefighters in accordance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988. • In accordance with this act, it shall be unlawful for any firefighter/member to manufacture, distribute, dispense, possess, or use a controlled substance in the workplace unless prescribed by a physician.
04-20Drug Free Workplace • Documentation shall be provided (prescription bottle or prescription itself). • Workplace is defined as any call, drill, and miscellaneous event location being used by the Brunswick Fire Company No. 1 at any particular time and in addition the Firehouse.
04-20Drug Free Workplace • If any Firefighter/Member is caught violating this act, that Firefighter/Member shall immediately be suspended for no less than five (5) days by the Chief Officer. • Within five (5) days of the incident, written notification of suspension shall be provided to the Firefighter/Member by the Chief Officer.
04-20Drug Free Workplace • The Chief Officer shall also notify the President IMMEDIATELY! • The Brunswick Fire Company No. 1 shall review and train on this procedure on an annual basis. • The review shall include, but is not limited to the following:
04-20Drug Free Workplace • The dangers of drug abuse in the workplace. • If warranted, random drug testing by a Certified Health Care Provider, at the expense of the Fire Company. • Possibility of drug counseling, rehabilitation, and employee assistance programs. • Failure to comply with this act shall mean termination from the Fire Company.
04-20Drug Free Workplace • It shall be the responsibility of each Firefighter/Member to immediately notify the Chief and President of any incidents involving Law Enforcement where the Firefighter/Member is issued a citation and/or sent to jail for issues involving controlled substances.
