Membership Survey 2007 Conducted on behalf of The Communication Workers Union byCentury One Publishing Ltd
Introduction • The purpose of commissioning this research was twofold:to gauge the CWU membership’s opinions of the main ‘public domain’ communication tools used by the Union; and, to create a benchmark on which to measure the membership’s changing attitudes to these communications. • Circa 22,000 email invitations were sent out to members, and within the research period 5,462 replies were received. This represents an approximate 2%+ sample of the Union’s membership • For the purposes of this presentation – only topline results have been shown, and where applicable results from more than one question are illustrated together. • The raw results showed an approximate 2:1 bias in favour of Telecoms & Finance members, therefore the analysis here has been re-weighted to better reflect the actual balance of Postal v Telecoms & Finance members within the CWU.
Age and sex profile • The Union’s membership is only 16% female. • Two-thirds of the Union’s members are between 35 and 54.
Ethnic and economic profile • The majority of the Union’s members describe themselves asWhite-British. • Three quarters of members describe themselves as semi-skilled, unskilled or skilled manual workers.
CWU membership profile • 53% of respondents have been members for 5 years or more. • 61% of respondents are lay members only.
CWU membership profile • Data reflects average membership split between Postal and Telecoms & Finance members. • The geographical split of the membership does not appear to show any major bias.
