Introduction • All four Gospel writers mention this incident • Though each, as usual, has their own unique view of the event • The event is set against the return of the Twelve after Jesus sent them out www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
The Disciples Return www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Matthew • Matthew 14:13-14 • 13Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Mark • Mark 6:33-34 • 33The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them. 34When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Sheep w/o a Shepherd • Numbers 27:17 • 15Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying, 16“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, 17who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep which have no shepherd.” 18So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him; 19and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Sheep w/o a Shepherd • Ezekiel 34:5, 23 • 5“They were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and they became food for every beast of the field and were scattered.” • 23“Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them; he will feed them himself and be their shepherd. • Jesus was “felt compassion” for those who were sick www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Luke • Luke 9:10-11 • 10When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. Taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called Bethsaida. 11But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Bethsaida www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
John • John 6:1-4 • 1After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). 2A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick. 3Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples. 4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • The crowds are determined to follow after Jesus • Why? • Is he avoiding them? • John 6:15 • 15So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
A LARGE HUNGRY CROWD www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Matthew • Matthew 14:15-16 • 15When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Mark • Mark 6:35-37 • 35When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and it is already quite late; 36send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37But He answered them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said* to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Luke • Luke 9:12-13 • 12Now the day was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place.” 13But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
John • John 6:5-7 • 5Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said* to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?”6This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. 7Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • The size of the crowd was at least 5,000 people • The nearest towns, Bethsaida and Capernaum, were a couple thousand people each in size • How practical would it be to send this crowd into these nearby villages to get something to eat? • Jesus seems almost to have set up this situation intentionally, leading the crowd out into the wilderness www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Why would Jesus pose the question to Philip as He did? • Did He not know what to do? • Jesus seems to be setting the stage for the miraculous event to follow • He seems to be setting up His disciples to learn something from it www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
The MIRACULOUS FEEDING www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Matthew • Matthew 14:17-21 • 17They said* to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” 18And He said, “Bring them here to Me.”19Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, 20and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. 21There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Mark • Mark 6:38-44 • 38And He said* to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they said*, “Five, and two fish.” 39And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass. 40They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. 41And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all. 42They all ate and were satisfied, 43and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish. 44There were five thousand men who ate the loaves. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Luke • Luke 9:12-13b • 13bAnd they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” 14(For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, “Have them sit down to eat in groups of about fifty each.” 15They did so, and had them all sit down. 16Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people. 17And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
John • John 6:8-11 • 8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said* to Him, 9“There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?” 10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
John (cont.) • John 6:12-14 • 12When they were filled, He said* to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.”13So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Logistics • Jesus seems to recognized as an authority, since His command to sit and organize is acted upon • Some see His “militaristic” organization as feeding the expectations of the crowd • Five loaves and two fish were enough for the young boy’s lunch • Small salted or roasted fish • Inexpensive loaves of barley bread • Contrasted with Herod’s feasting in previous passages www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Size of the Crowd • How big was the crowd? • Matt – 5,000 besides women and children • Mark – 5,000 men • Luke – 5,000 men • John – Men, 5,000 in number • Possibilities • All-male crowd • Only the men ate • Substantially more than 5,000 were fed • What difference does it make? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Three Views • (1) Jesus’ teaching open the hearts - and lunchboxes - of those in the crowd, each shared with his neighbor and everyone was fed • (2) The whole scene is symbolic of the Last Supper and the Lord’s Supper to follow, and each only received a token amount • (3) Jesus performed a miraculous act and multiplied the boy’s lunch to feed – and fill - 5,000 people www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Leftovers • All four accounts mention the quantity of food that was picked up after all were “satisfied” or had eaten “as much as they wanted” • 12 baskets full • Why mention this? • Why Jesus’ statement in John “so that nothing will be lost?” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Similarities • 2 Kings 4:42-44 • 42A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said. 43“How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked. But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’” 44Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
