"SOUL OF THE ROCK" Enhancing Leadership: Holding the Azimuth Clergy Care: The Hazards of VIPS Vocation vs. visitation Intimacy vs. isolation Presence vs. power Spirituality v. secularization
PURPOSE: • To identify and discuss critical aspects of the Unit Ministry Team’s Spiritual Life. • To provide a means for personal evaluation of Unit Ministry Team members spiritual health. • To Restore the Soul’s of those providing ministry.
"SOUL OF THE ROCK" I. Vocation vs. visitation “Vocation is where your deep gladness meets the world’s great need.”--Frederick Buechner
"SOUL OF THE ROCK" Each Call to Ministry should come with a WARNING DO NOT ATTEMPT ALONE!!!
Journaling #1 • What am I? • Who am I? • Whose am I? • Brief descriptions of: • Two times in your ministry when things worked so well you knew you were born to be a pastor. • One time when things were so bad you wished you had never been born!
"SOUL OF THE ROCK" II. Intimacy vs. isolation “You cannot be less neurotic with God than you are with people.”--Dr. Anna Maria Rizzuto
"SOUL OF THE ROCK" Clergy Burn-Out How Dry is Your Well? Burn-out and Self-Assessment Tools.
Journaling #2 Identify three times in your ministry when you felt most unappreciated. Identify three people who are your greatest irritants and cause you the most problems in your ministry.
"SOUL OF THE ROCK" III. Presence vs. power “When the therapist is reacting, there is no room for the client’s mind.”--Frederick Buechner Cultivating continual repentance, mindfulness, and awareness of the presence of God in order to:
Avoid: • Loss of touch with the wellspring of one’s vocation • Lack of personal intimacy • Failure of genuine presence • Consistent over-working Or…There will be Addictive Compensations
Journaling #3 What are the three most joyful moments of your life? What are the three greatest sacrifices you’ve made in your life? Why did you choose to make them? What form of suffering in the world calls forth the strongest response from you?
IV. Spirituality vs. Secularization “The pastors of America have metamorphosed into a company of shopkeepers, and the shops they keep are churches. They are preoccupied with shopkeeper’s concerns - how to keep the customers happy, how to lure customers away from competitors down the street, how to package the goods, so that the customers will lay out their money. What they do with their time under the guise of pastoral ministry hasn’t the remotest connections with what the church’s pastors have done for most of twenty centuries.” --Rev. Eugene Peterson
Journaling #4 What is the greatest obstacle to remaining in touch with the wellsprings of your sense of vocation?
"SOUL OF THE ROCK" TWO TRUTHS/POSITIONS: • Self-knowledge apart from God is an illusion. • Self-actualization apart from obedience to God is sin.
"SOUL OF THE ROCK" CONCLUSION “All people are made in God’s image; but to be in His likeness is granted only to those who through great love have brought their own freedom into subjection to God. For only when we do not belong to ourselves do we become like Him - Who through love has reconciled us to Himself. No one achieves this unless he persuades his soul not to be distracted by the false glitter of his life.” --St. Diadochus of Photiki From On Spiritual Knowledge and DiscriminationThePhilokalia, Vol I
