George Mason University Darren Cambridge OSP Summit Ann Arbor, MI May 14, 2007 OSP Summit
Goals for which we use OSP • Developing leadership identity and ability • Outcomes assessment as a negotiation between stakeholders OSP Summit
Contexts • Student affairs - academic affairs partnership • Co-curricular program on leadership identity development • An option for New Century graduation portfolio • Software hosted by r-smart with in-house XML development • Lots of HTML portfolio development across campus with long history OSP Summit
Current Use of Tools • Sequenced use over a semester: • Wizards: reflective writing and evidence gathering using a hierarchy of simple forms linked to prompts • Matrix: Connecting reflections and evidence to a shared interpretive framework based on leadership identity development theory • Portfolio: Creation of a leadership portfolio for student-chosen audiences using a template OSP Summit
Future Aspirations • Alternative to standardized testing for CHEV assessment and SACS accreditation • Continuity of portfolio practice across NCC program (working portfolio) • Documentation of “ineffable” learning outcomes (e.g. ethics, valuing, and global understanding) OSP Summit
Potential Resources • Testing (paid) • Documentation / Web design (goodwill) • Research on student learning = functional expertise (paid, sort of) • Grant writing (contingency) • Evangelism, editing, cheerleading, … OSP Summit
Immediate/Intermediate Needs • Ways to see changes for informal feedback • Increased end-user portfolio design flexibility • Enhancements for research • Integration with external social software • Import / Export OSP Summit
Ways to see changes for informal feedback • A listing of the most recently updated items (resources, wizard or matrix pages, portfolios, etc.) owned by a given user or set of users within a site = Dashboard? • A fast, clear way to see when students have associated something new with a wizard without them having to submit for evaluation OSP Summit
Increased end-user portfolio design flexibility • Improvement in usability of the freeform portfolio tool, which would allow for much more student control over layout, linking, etc. • Ability to use of rich text/HTML in form fields • Ability to make hyperlinks to items in resources within the text of a form field OSP Summit
Enhancements for research • Ways to take snapshots of wizards, matrixes, portfolios, etc. without action on the part of students (via Reports?) • Make it possible to extend the download functionality for portfolios currently available to their authors to people in other roles • Tagging of everything OSP Summit
Integration with external software • Ability to import, via Atom/RSS, posts from an external blog into resources for use in portfolios • Longer term: • Importing Flikr steams, 43 Things goals, Zotero references and tags, etc. • Integration with NVU, Dreamweaver • Integration with ELGG and VUE OSP Summit
Import / Export • Import and export between OSP instances • Import and export in IMS ePortfolio packages • Quick and dirty implementation making almost everything outbound a Product element and inbound a resource file OSP Summit
