Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test 3rd Grade Reading and Math Tentative Testing Window: April 16-27 FCAT 2.0
FCAT 2.0 Reading Test • Purpose – to measure students’ achievement in constructing meaning from a wide variety of texts • 60% of the test will contain literary text • 40% of the test will contain informational text • Includes two, sixty minute reading tests • All items multiple choice
Reading Levels and Passages • Reading selections will represent a range of reading ability within the grade • Will include reading levels appropriate for both the beginning and end of the grade • Each passage will range between 100-700 words, with an average of 500 words per passage • Average of 6-8 passages • Average of 50-55 questions
Reading Categories and Complexity Levels • Tested Categories • Vocabulary 15 – 25% • Reading Application 25 – 35% • Literary Analysis Fiction/Nonfiction 25 – 35% • Informational Text/Research Process 15 – 25% • Cognitive Complexity Levels of Questions • Low level: Basic Recall & Recognition, “Right There” questions 25-35% • Moderate level: Informal Reasoning or Problem Solving , “Playing the Detective, Looking for Clues” 50 -70% • High level : Elicit Analysis & Abstract Reasoning 5 – 15%

Reading – At Home Preparation • Monitor your child’s agenda for assignments • Provide time for you child to read at home (at least 30 minutes daily) • Listen to your child read and read with your child • Discuss the stories that are read with your child • Visit the public library to check out books • Have your child become an active participant in the Accelerated Reader program • Have your child go online to www.fcatexplorer.com

Math Complexity Levels • Low level: Recall & Recognition 25 – 35% • Moderate level: Informal Reasoning & Problem Solving 50 – 70 % • High level: Analysis & Abstract Reasoning 5-15%
How are math skills assessed? • Most are assessed in a problem solving context • Example: Fiona measured four items.
