What Are We Learning Today?. L.O. To read and write Proper Fractions. Take 12 cubes. 12 cubes joined together makes one whole stick. If I divide the stick into 2 equal parts I will have 2 halves. ½ + ½ = 1 whole If I now divide my stick into 4 equal parts I will have 4 quarters.

  2. Take 12 cubes • 12 cubes joined together makes one whole stick. • If I divide the stick into 2 equal parts I will have 2 halves. • ½ + ½ = 1 whole • If I now divide my stick into 4 equal parts I will have 4 quarters. • ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼ = 1 whole

  3. How many cubes were in each half? • How many cubes were in each quarter? • If I take just one quarter, how many quarters are left? • So I could write ¼ + ¾ = 1 • What would that be in cubes? • What number sentence could I write to show this? 3 + 9 = 12

  4. 10 Squares • How many squares are shaded? • How many squares are there altogether? • How can we write this as a fraction? • 3 10 • How many squares are not shaded?

  5. What are these 2 numbers? 3 10 Numerator How many sections are shaded Denominator How many sections the whole has been divided into
