Vision MiraCosta’s Online Education leverages an increasingly rich array of teaching and learning resources, experiences, and environments. MiraCosta College will lead in providing effective and innovative Online Education as an integral means of equitable access and student success. Mission MiraCosta College embraces student-centered, engaging, and accessible Online Education that meets student needs, enhances the learning experience, and broadens access to superior educational opportunities and support services.
Key terms • Distance Education (DE): instruction in which students and instructor are separate, but have regular substantive interaction through technology (Federal) • DE Class: A class where over 50% of instructional class time occurs via Distance Education. (state/ACCJC) • DE Program: A program where 50% or more of the required courses have been approved for offering as DE classes. (ACCJC)
Key terms • 100% Online Class: The entire class may be completed online. (MiraCosta) • Hybrid Class: Some instructional time occurs outside of the classroom. May be DE or non-DE. May be entirely online except exams. (MiraCosta) • Online Education: an expansive term encompassing technologies, services, resources, programs, classes, and teaching/learning experiences that are mediated at least partially through the Internet. How Online Ed Supports Student Success • Online academic support services: tutoring, writing center, library • Online counseling/advising and (increasingly) other student services • Student Orientation to Online Learning • Increasing classes using low- and no-cost digital course materials • Faculty development for enhanced online course design and teaching • Robust set of online teaching & learning tools
Notable Accomplishments, 2017-18 • Completion of Canvas transition • Designation of ZTC and Low Textbook Cost (LTC) classes in SURF • Continued Online Education Initiative participation • Student Orientation to Online Learning has now served nearly 2700 students
Work in Progress • Development of online teaching preparation resources and experiences for MiraCosta faculty • Development of an online student support hub within Canvas; expansion of live online options for student support • Selection of a video management system to be integrated with Canvas • Ensuring online education aligns with and supports Guided Pathways and Equity work • Compliance with changes to Title 5
