I like to open this meeting by announcing that last December Iceland joined the International Scientific Continental Drilling Program (ICDP) And at the same time I welcome all of you to this workshop at Nesjavellir I like in particular to welcome a representative from ICDP in Potsdam, Dr. Ulrich Harms As you all know ICDP sponsors this 1st IDDP / ICDP WorkshopI The Icelandic Research Council represents Iceland in ICDP
A preproposal application to ICDP to help funding the organization of the science program of IDDP was submitted January 2001. 50.000 US $ were granted in April 2001 A Science Application Group of Advisors (SAGA) was established with 7 international scientists and 7 Icelandic Start-up meeting was held in June 2001 Workshop 1 is being opened today INTERNATIONAL CONTINENTAL DRILLING PROGRAMICDP
Background data introduced International SAGA members introduced their own experience of deep drilling projects Meeting split to 3 panels (working groups) GeoScience - Drilling Technique - Pilot Plant Plenary session - Conclusions SAGA report at www.os.is/iddp IDDP/ICDP - Start-up meetingJune 2001 - Participants 30-40
Pilot Plant Panel concluded they would prefer to deal with supercritical fluid in a slim casing at the beginning, in order to minimise the risk of loosing the well during experimental phase. Slim casings replaceable Pilot Plant Panel could do with a slim hole Drilling Technique Panel visualised a full-size cased drill hole to 3-4 km depth - and a slim hole to 5 km depth IDDP/ICDP - Start-up meeting Conclusions - I
This opened the possibility of using the largest existing drill rig in Iceland for all the IDDP drill hole - by using an ICDP linked coring rig (the DOSECC hybrid coring system) for the deepest part of the well, and possibly cut the cost of the experiment considerably Amongst benefits: The possibility of repeating the bottom part of the drill hole several times if needed Valuable knowledge on the permeability of the high-T systems between 2-4 km depth IDDP/ICDP - Start-up meeting Conclusions - II
Pilot Plant test of supercritical fluid secured Possible reinjection test on the well later Option of drilling a conventional production well through the casing between 2-3,5 km later Production drilling to 5 km if successful test Therefore: Most of the investment in the IDDP deep well will be employable to the energy companies, irrespective of the outcome of the IDDP experiment on the supercritical hydrous fluid system ! IDDP/ICDP - Start-up meeting Conclusions - III
Energy companies finance the drilling of the production casing to 3-4 km depth Seek international funding to finance the research part of the well into a supercritical fluid system - which is of international importance DeepVision visualise that each energy company drills a 3-4 km cased exploration well at each drill site, and allows the international science community to perform a series of tests on the somewhat variable supercritical fluid systems. IDDP/ICDP - Start-up meeting Conclusions - IV
IDDP/ICDP - Workshop 1 15-21 March 2002 • Because of the anticipated difficulties of drilling, the workshop in March needs to focus on drilling techniques and science directly addressing the drilling strategy • An application to ICDP to fund a second IDDP/ICDP-Workshop in October 2002, addressing pre-, during-, and past-drilling science issues, was submitted last January
IDDP/ICDP - Workshop 1 Future Plan • The IDDP drilling may take place as early as 2004 • A full proposal to ICDP to participate in the IDDP drilling is planned for January 2003 • Deadline for application to participate in the IDDP/ICDP Workshop 2 in October, is July 1st 2002.
